In June 2015, Anthem, Inc., one of the nation’s leading health benefits companies, advanced its commitment to employee skill development and career growth through higher education by expanding its partnership with College for America. Building upon a pilot program that launched in January 2013, Anthem offered access to College for America’s degrees to over 50,000 of its associates nationwide.

College for America degree programs cost $3,000 per year and are designed specifically for working adults. They are competency based, project based, and directly applicable in the workplace. Anthem’s annual Education Assistance benefit amply covers the cost of the programs for full-time associates – meaning eligible full-time employees can earn a degree while strengthening valuable skills at no cost.

It was a momentous announcement for both organizations; now, one year later, the partnership is thriving with some incredible results.

To date, nearly 1,600 Anthem associates have enrolled in College for America programs. Of these students, 92 have earned degrees from College for America; 89 have earned associate degrees and three have earned bachelor’s degrees.

Enrolled associates are also experiencing direct results in the workplace. More than 30 percent of Anthem’s College for America graduates have been promoted – a rate that is 50 percent higher than non-graduates in similar roles.

Students are reporting positive experiences, ranking College for America degree programs with satisfaction scores above 98 percent.

Garry Adams, an Anthem associate and College for America student, says, “I feel like I’ve actually stepped up to be more of a leader, and I’ve wanted to learn more about my job. My college education gives me the confidence to take on anything here and apply what I’m learning anywhere else I want to go.”

We’re thrilled to have Anthem as a partner as we pursue our mission of expanding access to and improving the quality of higher education. We look forward to continued success for our students and their employers in the coming year!
